Ascoli Piceno – Piazza Arringo

Ascoli Piceno has two large piazza but Piazza Arringo is the largest. This rectangular piazza is named for the arengo or public assemblies that took place here and is the political and religious center of town. On the east end of the piazza is the Cattedrale di San Emidio and Baptistry. Along the south side is the Palazzo dell’Arengo which houses the town hall and municipal art gallery. There are two matching fountains in the piazza where young and old alike take their turns getting drinks from bronze seahorses spouting water from their mouths.

This area is used for the monthly antique market, Quintana festivities, various holiday events and a daily place for people to stroll. There area several cafes along the north side where patrons can sit outside and watch people go by. There are several shops, restaurants, museums and a tourist information center located in Piazza Arringo.
