Road house
Casa Cantoniera
As you drive along the two lane roads of Italy you will see buildings, many that look like houses, along side the road that are painted a dark red. Most of these are in varying states of disrepair. These are the Casa Cantoniera which were built at regular intervals along the roadways to house caretakers for the highways. They will have the number of the road and the kilometer marker on the side and big letters “Casa Cantoniera”. There was also a similar system developed for the Italian railroad.
I have seen at least one of these in the hills of Marche that has obviously been restored and is occupied; it even has a flower garden outside.

I thought they were some type of bar or club. Like an American Legion or VFW hall we have here.
Hi Brian, I live in Giulianova and an coming over to Ascoli P. for lunch in the next couple of days. Any suggestions for a local trattoria with good food at reasonable prices in the city center? Jay
Sorry about the misspelling, please correct it and delete this entry. Guess I should have gone for Bruno.
Jay, Be aware this weekend is the antique market so it will be busy. Try this link for several options:

Thanks Bryan, we wound up going earlier than I thought, today at lunch and ate at LaLiva. Amazing that going with Italians who have lived here their whole lives, none of them knew anything about A.P. restaurants.
L'aliva (dialect for l'oliva) does a pretty good tourist business, she has some very good dishes.
