When we were planning our trip to the US for my nephews wedding one of the things we kept going back and forth on was whether Valerie would come due to the high cost of summer air travel. While we were looking into airfares Valerie’s ninety-seven year old grandmother was hospitalized for pneumonia and then moved from her apartment at an assisted living facility to a nursing home. With those events Valerie knew she had to come back to se e her grandmother.
We had the opportunity to see grandma before traveling to the wedding and also after we returned to Ohio and there was a noticeable decline in her condition during the short time between those visits. Last Thursday came the call we expected, that she had passed away quietly with some of her family with her.
Grandma lived a full life serving her family and those around her in rural Norwalk, OH. Her life is an example to her family and all who knew her of what it truly means to have a servant’s heart. Valerie always had a special connection with her grandparents and parts of her thoughts on her grandmother were used in the eulogy at the funeral yesterday.
This has been another weekend of seeing family and friends but as last weekend with my family was celebrating a couple’s new life together and the possibilities that presents, this time was spent celebrating a life that has passed and all that her life meant to so many people. We have comfort in knowing she is now with her husband and her Lord.
